installing a ridge vent ?

inmy attic I have gable vents and I want to take them out and put in gable windows. In order to keep the attic ventalated i want to install a ridge vent. I have a chimney going up thru the center of my attic and thru the ridge of my roof. can i still install a ridge vent there ?

  2. You should be able to install ridge vents on the roof on each side of the chimney. While you are working on this you should double check that your soffit vents are clear of insulation. If you don't have soffit vents then you should add them too and install baffles between the roof rafters to keep attic insulation from getting pushed over the soffit vents and against the underside of your roof sheathing and blocking the air flow from the soffit vents.
  3. JIM B IS CORRECT. REMEMBER THAT THE 4 FOOT RIDGE VENT IS 96 SQ/ IN OF EXHAUST-ABLE AIR. MAKE SURE U HAVE ENOUGH SOFFITT VENTS OR MORE FOR GREATER VENTILATION. IF U HAVE TRUE GABLE VENT LEAVE THEM.
