At what height of eaves should an Attic vent be below your gable end height?

At the top? I have rectangular ones that are slightly below the top for placement.

1. Please reword your question. Gable end vents are usually mounted just low enough from the peak to have enough room to miss the trim or crown moulding. Roof vents are usually mounted on the back of the house just low enough so that the top of the vent is not visible from the roadway.
