Ventilation Louvres

I am vinyl siding my house. I am nailing j-channel to the gable, when I noted the gable vent is aluminum.?

I can't nail into the aluminum vent. What are my options? Should I nail into the slight overhang, or do I need to use something else there? It's hard to do this without pictures. At the top of the gable, flush against the corner is an aluminum vent in the side of the house. The j-channel as I understand it, would run right over this....so...

  1. Ther is a special trim piece for the top , its much smaller than j channel that locks the top in as j chanel wont. And you should be nailing to the house not the vent, If its a vent in the side of the house then nail j channel around it , there should be framming behind the vent.
  2. you can get vented siding to go over the vent--also you can use metal screws in place of nails--you may need small washers
  3. just use small gutter screws. you can get them at any siding suppy house. they are made to screw through gutters and will hold just fine through an old aluminum vent. and make sure the vent is no longer in use. if it is the heat will ruin your siding. the veht was meant to exhaust heat from your attic space or your bathroom vent. if a new vent is needed just add a new vent over top. if it a bathroom vent add a j vent which will replace it.
