Can a propane or natural gas furnace and energy system produce a soot as it were that is toxic to humans?
If the system is not properly exhausted or if there is some defect, can it make your nose black inside after you breathe there for a while? My daughter has breast cancer which has mestatasized to her lungs and when I spend more than a couple of hours at her trailer, my nostrils turn black inside. I can't see the film elsewhere, but their carpet is grey, so I am not sure I would see it. Chairs are black or darker color also. It seems to me it might be the gas energy system somewhere or ventilation or her oxygen ventilator that is causing this.

- If there is poor combustion of the propane and/or natural gas then you can have a sooty black residue. With gas however it will be very hard to produce the amount of soot that would even make your snot turn black. I suspect that the furnace filters have never been changed, or it's been a long time, and that may be the culprit. Also if you suspect poor combustion of propane and/or natural gas you should have the trailer checked for Carbon Monoxide. Hope this helps.
- Yes You are right to suspect the gas being the cause. I can think of few reason for bad combustion exhausting is one the nozzle which is call the burner may need to adjusted by technician for good combustion, maybe the air is not sufficient for clean burning, being cold all the windows and main Doors are naturally closed, this can also be the reason for fresh air not sufficient inside the vicinity don't forget it can dangerous when every body is sleeping with excess C.O2 can kill
