Ventilation Louvres

How can I properly ventilate a hip roof with continuous soffit vents, but no ridge vent?

I have a hip roof with a continuous soffit vent on three sides, but no ridge vent. It has an 8-foot ridge that runs back into a gable roof that runs perpendicular to it. There is about 10' of ridge vent in the gable roof, as well as a gable vent on one end. Is this providing enough ventilation for the 16'x24' hip roof?

  1. If you think it needs a ridge vent then put one in. I myself think the more ventilation the better it is especially if you live in the southern states where it is always hot and humid.
  2. You need to install 2 roof vents spaced equally to ventilate the attic.
  3. I would put a couple of "whirly bird" vents close to the ridge on the hip side.
  4. You can put in a couple whirly birds, dormir vents, or O'hagen vents, depending on what type of roof you have.
