Pudding Hamster & air conditioning/ventilation?

I have 2 puddings and it's bedding is the natural soil type material. it has its own house and some hay. I placed them in a shelf where there is 1 inch of space for ventilation. Will it feel cold if i put my air-con to 23 degrees for about 8-12 hours a day? One of my friends turned on his air-con for 2 days about 18 degrees and 3 of his hamsters died. Im not very sure of what surrounding my hamster needs. also, there is a lid with about half an arm's length of opening left for ventilation. so is there enough space for the air ventilation if i continue placing it in the shelf and will it be frozen to death?
