sustainable design in a dense urban tropical country?

Is the use of sustainable design suitable (such as natural light, ventilation, use of strawbale or other natural construction materials, solar power, recyling and re-use) in a dense urban core and tropical country? Im am curious to know since air, noise, water pollution, tall buildings could affect the sustainability of the design... Thanks!

1. No city is sustainable without money. You can have all the alternative measures you want, but it will all come apart if you don't have the money to build it, maintain it and develop it. The consumption for a high density population will always out strip the supply of resources and collapse. Unless other resources can become available to feed the population. This can come from other areas that have a lower population density and have grater productivity per population than in the city. No city can ever be self sustaining unless the population density is distributed over a vast area. But then it wouldn't be called a city, will it?
