How to properly flash octagon gable vent?

I dont have any trouble flashing square, rectangle, or triangle windows and vents. When it comes to round and octagon shapes I typically just make it work with lots of caulking. Is there a diagram or manual online somewhere that shows the correct way to flash these odd shapes?

1. Why would you be flashing them and what are you doing the flashing with?
2. Use coil stock or roof step flashing and window wrap.
