Can you use only natural ventilation for a big underground carpark? The car park is one level(in the basement), fully enclosed and in a warm and humid country. Openings can only be made on the top of the car park, no sides. Will air wells help? How big should they be if yes? Are there any like examples (basement car park with natural ventilation) out there? Thanks
Do natural gas stoves & ovens need ventilation? The house I'm renting doesn't have any sort of vent over or around our stove that's run on natural gas. This doesn't seem that safe to me; I study science so it should be a clean burn, but I still can't see it being all that great for our health. Our landlords are irritated because we open the kitchen door when we cook to avoid inhalation of gas fumes. Anyone with more knowledge of kitchen appliances than I would would be of great help; apparently my Chemistry background isn't enough here. Thanks! None of the windows in the kitchen open, the only source of ventilation is the sliding glass door. My family at home always turns on the fan when we cook(on our natural gas stove), so I just got into the habit of it, and was annoyed when the rental house didn't have a fan or anything. It's also a fairly old & cheap model, it definitely does not have any sort of sensor on it. Thanks for all your input so far.
do the boiler room need forced Ventilation? I have a boiler room in my factory, and I need to know if this room need forced or natural ventilation as the supplier says that the windows of the room are enough for the ventilation process. should I force him to add a fan in this room.
Natural way to clean badly stained tub surround? I can't use chemical cleaners because my bathroom has no ventilation and I have curious cats who like to visit the tub from time to time. The surround is really really stained and streaked with accumulated soap scum and dirt, is there any way I can get it clean without harsh chemicals?
Can I replace an Oil fired boiler with a natural gas one? I have gas in the house, and the oil boiler is very old. Is it possible to change heat types? I want the new setup to vent out thru a ventilation pipe so I can close the old unlined chimney. And can I do it for less than $6000?
sustainable design in a dense urban tropical country? Is the use of sustainable design suitable (such as natural light, ventilation, use of strawbale or other natural construction materials, solar power, recyling and re-use) in a dense urban core and tropical country? Im am curious to know since air, noise, water pollution, tall buildings could affect the sustainability of the design... Thanks!
Are there any plants that would flourish in a cellar? I want to make my cellar - which has no natural daylight or ventilation -an attractive place to be and would love a few plants to pep things up. Does anyone know of any plants (not mushrooms please!) that would flourish in these conditions? I don't want plastic either! Cheers
natural ways to get rid of fleas??!!? I have a bunny and even though she has never been outside since she was born.. she somehow ended up with fleas.. and our apartment we brought her into never even had fleas, but now she has them.. and we have put flea powder on the floors, vacuumed the carpets and curtains, swept and sprayed flea stuff all over the wood floors, sprayed behind corner, washed blankets, set off bug bombs.. and we still have fleas. we do not have them so bad that you can see them on her, but i am very sensitive to insect bites, and have been getting a few lately. i actually seen a flea on my neck when i was driving in my car, and ended up with a welk on my neck. now here is what i am wanting to know.... is there a natural way to get rid of fleas?? because all of the chemicals gave me a headache, and my apartment is small with no ventilation.. and i cannot afford an exterminator... i am also wondering whether salt water sprayed around the apartment would kill them? or spraying a bleach water mix around? and last but not least.. is there anything i can do to prevent fleas from wanting to bite me? something natural. i dont have a dog or cat.
Is it possible to create "natural" sunlight at office.? Hi,I work in an office without any windows, with a ventilation system.I nearly don't receive any sunlight and my skin is very pale,I don't think that it is good for my health.I am using a regular 100 watt light bulb.Is it possible to create sunlight with a special light bulb that would help me get vitamin D?
how can i lower the electricity consumption of a 160 unit, mid-rise condominium? i would like to design the building to be energy efficient (the building is in a tropical climate) besides designing the building to allow natural sunlight and ventilation (passive cooling to save on air-conditioning) i am thinking of using LED for lighting some parts of the building, can you give me comparison of CFLs LEDs and ordinary lights (prices etc.) thanks!
are these sounds natural for my xbox 360? well,i always hear strong sound and i know its the ventilation but when i put in a disc like lets say gta 4 it starts making 'dd dd dd' sounds is this natural? or do i have to do something to stop it.?
What should I look for when buying a modern old house? By modern old house I mean it was built with indoor plumbing, electricity and natural gas for heating and cooking. Probably built sometime in the 40's or 50's and is on piers (pillars), has or had an attic fan for ventilation/cooling. Is there a check list on how to inspect a house before buying somewhere on the net that I can print?
Pudding Hamster & air conditioning/ventilation? I have 2 puddings and it's bedding is the natural soil type material. it has its own house and some hay. I placed them in a shelf where there is 1 inch of space for ventilation. Will it feel cold if i put my air-con to 23 degrees for about 8-12 hours a day? One of my friends turned on his air-con for 2 days about 18 degrees and 3 of his hamsters died. Im not very sure of what surrounding my hamster needs. also, there is a lid with about half an arm's length of opening left for ventilation. so is there enough space for the air ventilation if i continue placing it in the shelf and will it be frozen to death?
How well do natural cleaners work? So I'm usually a bleach kind of girl. Mom always used Comet to clean, I use it and I use bleach on other things. Yes, I'm a bit of a germaphobic I am a teacher and I've already had a nasty, nasty head cold. I like to keep my house clean, but I'm starting to really dislike the cleaners I buy at the store. Not only are they pricey, but certain areas--the bathroom, especially--have poor ventilation in my apartment. Cleaning the shower requires me to nearly suffocate myself when I spray on my Clorox "natural" cleaner. Here is what I want: 1. Something that smells good 2. Something that disinfects (this is a biggy!) 3. Something that gets rid of mold, mildew, soap scum (yuck!) Do you have any suggestions for recipes? Also, I found the following recipe for a natural disinfecting spray. How well can this work? Vinegar, water and essential oils? Does this work as well as, say, Clorox wipes or disinfecting spray? "2 Cups Water, 1/4 Cup White Vinegar, 1/4 tsp. Tea Tree Oil, 1/4 tsp. Lavender Oil. Combine and store in a spray bottle. Shake occasionally. Use where ever a disinfectant spray is needed." (What is it with essential oils? I've read if you mix this and that they are a disinfecting solution...) Please, convince this Clorox supporter to switch to more natural remedies. How well do "natural" cleaners you make at home work? Are they as trust worthy as my beloved bleach? Will they really disinfect the bathroom fixtures between cleanings? Any suggestions for recipes?
When the air conditioning is on at our office, I feel drowsy and less able to concentrate. Any solutions? It's a relatively new office (completely renovated fall 2006), with a new HVAC equipment/etc. I just find that I feel drowsy, less alert, with perhaps a slight reduction in my ability to concentrate, when the HVAC is blowing (it cycles on and off; maybe on for 5-10 min and then off for 30, etc..). I'm sure it's not a filter problems, since there's no perceptible odors and everything is brand new. Also, the sensation varies; usually I'm not as bothered when the ventilation/AC is functioning early in the morning (ie. 10 AM); the circulating air feels more "refreshing" then, as opposed to the afternoon when it feels more "stale" (but this could be somewhat psychological). Any ideas on what I could do to fix the problem? Any natural/organic air fresheners that could help? I don't want to use an ionizer ; I once read that air conditioners deplete the air of negative ions, but this seems like a foolish/baseless theory.
Girls: What sensations do you feel wearing a dress compared to pants? If I wore a dress I would guess I would feel half dressed or vulnerable not being fully enclosed. Is that a natural feeling or is it sensuous or cool having a bit of ventilation? I hear pany hose are warm to wear in the winter. I even heard motorcyclists sometimes wear pantyhose for added warmth but they will never admit to it. The feeling must be kinda flirty cause you can turn a quick corner and twirl the dress up for a little added attention and walking upstairs I guess you gotta hold your hand on your backside to cover up from below and if a man HAPPENS to be walking under the stairs when you go up do you blame him or ???? Inquiring minds want to know so share with us!!! lilrkp1: No I am not gay and No I have never worn a dress. The reason people ask questions is because they do not know the answer and are curious. As I stated... I think it would feel vulverable. If you were not aware of this then you did not read or understand the question
FHA legal recourse? What can I do? Examples of conditions that still require automatic inspection, but not limited to: Standing water against foundation, or excessively wet basement Hazardous materials on site Faulty mechanical systems: electrical, plumbing, or heating Structural failure: settlement or bulging foundation walls Examples of conditions that may be of risk to health and safety of occupants or soundness of property that continue to require automatic repair, but are not limited to: Inadequate access/egress from bedrooms to exterior of home Leaking or worn out roofs Structural problems such as foundation damage caused by settlement Defective paint surfaces in homes built before 1978 Defective exterior paint on homes built after 1978 where finish is unprotected A. TOPOGRAPHY (3-2) Proper topography and site grading can be important elements in preventing wet basements, damp crawl spaces, erosion of soils, and overflowing sewage disposal systems. To ensure proper protection, the appraiser must analyze the relationship of street grades, floor elevations, and lot grades. If the foundation or its bearing soils may be affected by seepage or frost, the dwelling is unacceptable unless the surface and subsurface water is diverted from the structures to ensure positive drainage away from the foundation. 2. Hazards The property must be free of all known hazards and adverse conditions that: o may affect the health and safety of the occupants o may affect the structural soundness of the improvements o may impair the customary use and enjoyment of the property These hazards include toxic chemicals, radioactive materials, other pollution, hazardous activities, potential damage from soil or other differential ground movements, ground water, inadequate surface drainage, flood, erosion, excessive noise and other hazards on or off site. 4. Drainage The site must be graded to provide positive drainage away from the perimeter walls of the dwelling and to prevent standing water on the site. Signs of inadequate draining include standing water proximate to the structure and no mitigation measures such as gutters or downspouts. 8. Defective Conditions A property with defective conditions is unacceptable until the defects or conditions have been remedied and the probability of further damage eliminated. Defective conditions include: o defective construction o poor workmanship o evidence of continuing settlement o excessive dampness o leakage o decay o termites o other readily observable conditions that impair the safety, sanitation The items outlined in VC-7: Structural Conditions, are meant to alert the appraiser and the lender to the possibility of defective conditions. These items are readily identifiable characteristics that could indicate one of the defective conditions. 9. Ventilation Natural ventilation of structural space - such as 10. Foundations All foundations must be adequate to withstand all normal loads imposed. Stone and brick foundations are acceptable if they are in good condition. The appraiser must review the conditions in VC-8 for evidence of conditions that could indicate safety or structural deficiencies that may require repair. 12. Roof The covering must prevent moisture from entering and must provide reasonable future utility, durability and economy of maintenance. 14. Heating Heating must be adequate for healthful and comfortable The appraiser must note and make a repair requirement for any health or safety deficiencies as they relate to the subject property, including: o broken windows, doors or steps Peeling interior paint and broken or seriously cracked plaster or sheetrock require repair and repainting These are the FHA appraisal rules that I have looked up. This is a long story I don't have the time to tell but I can prove they lied to me about a bunch of stuff. The issues here are I have a flooding basement coming in from the foundation. I have seriously damaged plaster walls. I have broken unsafe cement oustide. I do not have gutters. My furnace vent pipe was red tagged my eletric is not up to code. (60 amps maxed out before I got here.) My hot water heater broke withiin 3 months dunno if i Can do anything about that. Therefore I have no hot water or heat. I had a room full of fiberglass pipes and two bats among other oddities from floor to ceiling in the basement when I got here. They did not show me this room when showing me the house and I didn't see it bc of lighting in basement. There is evidence of continuing settlement as my doors don't even shut because the doorways are so crooked and the floors as well. The wood is coming up in the kitchen underneath thetile. Just a lot of stuff the l Oh and my roof had a piece on the ground the day I moved in when they told me i had a good 10 to 20 years left on it HA!
Are houses in the U.S. ...? airconditioned? I'm just curious because in the movies, it almost always seems so, as though the temperature's cool enough inside houses. I would just like to know if most houses in America use natural ventilation, electric fans, or airconditioners? Thanks guys!
Hot flashes and flushes? Hi, Im a 20 year old female. I attend a social meet group and we hold the meet in a air-coned room with no natural ventilation uness the door is opend [as we are watching movies it is not due to noise and light] Ive only gone 3 times and every time i find i overheat yet i feel thie chill still so im constantly puting on and off layers to maintain comfort [its winter btw] I feel like i have a fever. My body heat makes the air around me feel colder and i perspire and i just want to get it under control because its awkward. I cant get close to and be comfy with people cause im afraid i stink. It only happens at these meets and i think its because of the rooms because im comfy around the members.
Please help me figure this out!!!? Please help me with this and please don’t x out of this with leaving a short reply! I am freaking out worrying that skyscrapers are harmful to the environment. I know I have made threads about this in other forum sections but I had so many questions and different threads so I just wanted to put everything down in one spot. Ok, now I know density is more sustainable than urban sprawl for obvious reasons, but it seems like the most sustainable city-type would be a dense city filled with mid-rises. Now, while mid-rise cities are great, let’s face it, skyscrapers are awesome and awe-inspiring. Mid-rises can’t compete IMO. My fear that the skyscraper is unsustainable has stemmed from reading stuff about all the energy it takes to build them and operate their elevators, all the embodied energy in structural stuff like steel and concrete, etc. So, to make this as simple and organized as possible, I thought I would make a list of things I have heard that claim a skyscraper is unsustainable and then give my opinion on each list item. Now, I love skyscrapers and but I feel that it would bother me if they were not earth-friendly, so please help me out with this. Here are some things I have read that claim certain aspects of a skyscraper aren’t environmentally friendly: (1.) Ken Yeang, a highly educated “eco-architect” who has written many books says that skyscrapers are one of the most unecological building-types there is and that they can never be fully green in totality. Therefore, we must negate their negative effect as much as possible. (2.) A lot of energy has to be used to: get all that steel way up to the top of the building, operate the elevators, keep the hallways and lobby lit and heated/cooled, etc. (3.) A lot of energy is used to create the concrete and steel that is used in building skyscrapers. (4.) Ken Yeang is for biodiversity and thinks that the human-made environment should be benign and integrated into nature. He claims that failure to integrate our man-made systems into nature’s systems would mean that our man-made systems will remain artificial (as opposed to organic) items and potential polluters. Now here is what I am thinking/wondering about each of these points: (1.) Can ANY building other than a mud hut actually be 100% green? (2.) Can’t we use greener energy to operate the machines that lift all the steel? Can’t a building create its own energy to operate elevators, lights, HVACs? (3.) I read that there are greener alternatives to concrete and steel. The steel alternative is being used in a building in Dubai and supposedly has way less embodied energy. Plus, aren’t they using recycled steel from the Twin Towers to build the new WTC? (4.) I totally understand his point about being organic and integrated into nature because, let’s face it, all other animals don’t produce inorganic waste. But, what is wrong with a skyscraper that creates all of it’s own energy, uses natural ventilation, and uses rainwater for toilets, etc? Sure it won’t be “organic” or “benign,” but it won’t be polluting and it will be using all of the available resources. Now, please give your honest opinion on all of this. I really want and need your help. Please don’t be biased towards or against cities or skyscrapers. Just state what you believe to be true. Thank you so much for staying ‘til the end. I greatly appreciate your time!

Plant life in a glass courtyard? I am a design student and I want to make sure that my concept for an enclose glass courtyard is technically sound. I want to create a glass courtyard in the center of a building covered with a glass skylight. I know this is similar to a greenhouse, but what I really want to know is if the natural ground was available in this courtyard (not covered with a flooring material) would things like grass and even a tree be able to sustain life? I do understand that I would probably need to allow for some duct-work for temperature control and ventilation. Thanks!
A.O.Smith gas water heater combustion and ventilation air flow? I live in central Tx. I just installed a A.O. Smith natural gas water heater and when inspected it failed because they said the water heater had to elevated above the pan because the air intake is the lowest part of the water heater, and was blocking the combustion. I just wanted to know if this was part of the manufacturers installation deal or part of the IRC 06, because I could not find it ANYWHERE? THANKS for info. P.s. water heater was installed in attic, and I looked at other new residential houses and they were using the same type of bottom air intake water heater and they were raised by bricks.
Can a propane or natural gas furnace and energy system produce a soot as it were that is toxic to humans? If the system is not properly exhausted or if there is some defect, can it make your nose black inside after you breathe there for a while? My daughter has breast cancer which has mestatasized to her lungs and when I spend more than a couple of hours at her trailer, my nostrils turn black inside. I can't see the film elsewhere, but their carpet is grey, so I am not sure I would see it. Chairs are black or darker color also. It seems to me it might be the gas energy system somewhere or ventilation or her oxygen ventilator that is causing this.
is a contained, man made, natural ecosystem possible in a greenhouse? Weird question probably but i have always had an obsession with creating my own jungle style greenhouse, koi pond included and possible semi free range guinea pig included. I have worked out more or less the cost and design of the green house. now comes the next part, the problems, mildew, rot, mold, rats and of course the dreaded insects. Ventilation should solve most of the problems with a little added care. but what about the insects, in a contained enviroment it might make it harder for the bugs to get in, but when they are it will be harder (and less inclined) to get out again. so obviously i will have to invest in some ladybirds or similar predators. what i am wondering is if it would be possible to put in only one population of ladybirds that will maintain a constant population and will control the pest problem that will not all fly off should i open the door to cool the greenhouse. I would like the greenhouse to run itself really, i would only have to intervene to do the odd bit of weeding and trimming. has anyone managed this? any thoughts welcome. Also the guinea pigs was an after thought as i think (providing the small vunurable parts of the plants are out of reach) it would have a fun time in a large run (big greenhouse) adding some fertilizer and possibly help out with the weeds. do people think this could be a good idea?
What is a safe and economical way to vent a natural gas water heater? I am specifically interested in the material and what section of the hardware store to find it. Due to the variance in the dimensions between the new water heater and the old one, I can’t use the old vent. I need a little more length. The vent is 3 inches in diameter. I need a one foot section and three foot section with a flexible “elbow” connecting the two. The previous vent was very thin sheet metal and it had surface rust on it. The elbow was a corrugated bendable piece. When I went to Lowes, they had vent pieces in the water heater section. But, by the time I bought everything, it would have been close to $50!! The ventilation they had looked like a vent within a vent. Do most local codes require this type of venting or is there a more economical way to vent this using something similar to what was there before? Would metal corrugate venting like one used in a clothes dryer work? Safety is critical also. I know sometimes Lowe's sticks it to you with their kits.

I need details about energy efficiency in architecture? how do buildings perform energy efficiently? i need details about hybrid systems coming up newly to reduce the heat in buildings, to maintain good quality of air inside a building and related stuff. Other than mechanical ventilation, could natural air be used in cold climates? but not increasing the heating load inside!
What is a ranking matrix? I am comparing diferent ways to cool a building, (for example, Natural Vetilation, A/C , Mechanical Ventilation) and I need to compare these different methods using a ranking matrix (ASHRAE). So What is a ranking matrix???
Heating/heater issues? This is what this house has: a gas heater, electric ingiter, fan (blower). This is what's happening: Thermostat controls heater system (of course). Natural gas is released, electric igniter lights gas (creates heat), blower is activated, heat is blown though venting system. Then, gas expulsion is stopped (thus ceasing HEAT), and fan continues to blow for...oh...30-45 seconds. When the burners stop making heat, and the fan continues to blow, we get chilly (not cold) air through the venting system, somewhat defeating the purpose of creating heat. (the house does become warmer, by small increments) I have discovered tonight that the fan's inlet/intake comes from a chimney/stack/ducting leading to the roof, outside...fresh air circulation, NOT recycled air circulation. My questions: Shouldn't the air (blower) intake come from inside the area to be heated (creating real warmth) as opposed to getting cold air from outside? Why was this system built this way? I am planning to modify the blower induction to be recycled, instead of fresh air. What, if any, danger to my family and the house am i risking? If i switch to recycled air induction, would I be violating any codes? Why is this code in place? (if this a code issue) [The heating system is vented, other than having fresh air circulation, and the sheet metal barriers (i forget the proper word at the moment) to the A/C system (which shares the ventilation system with the heating system) are in place.]

Should public restrooms be moved outside? Even with excellent ventilation and proper janitorial processes public restrooms tend to get dirty and have foul smells. Lets face it, it is a very dirty natural process which sould not be confined indoors.
First time Hydroponic Garden? I have been looking at setting up a Hydroponic Garden in my outside laundry too grow some vegetables but I'm not sure where I should start. I have talked to some local shops that specialize in it so I have a rough idea but if anyone out there has some first hand experience I'd appreciate the feedback. I'm thinking 2 pots, feed rings, tank, pump in a run to waste system using coco as a medium. I was going to grow either strawberries and lettuce or lettuce and hops. Was thinking of starting with natural light, manual ventilation from outside. I don't see the temperature dropping too low, im in SA so the chance of frost where I'm at is virtually 0.
In New York City, approximately what percent of carbon emissions is generated by buildings? For years New York City was slow to embrace green building guidelines used in cities like San Francisco to promote environmentally-friendly construction. In the post-World War II construction boom, changes in zoning regulations and the widespread use of air conditioning led to the design of sealed glass and steel towers. Without natural sources of light and ventilation, such buildings required large amounts of fossil fuels to operate. This phase of building style is rapidly changing in New York, which has become a leader in energy-efficient green office buildings like 7 World Trade Center, which recycles rainwater and uses it in toilets and for irrigation, and computer-controlled heating and lighting. The United States Green Building Council estimates 3,000 new green apartments in New York City have been built since 2001. In 2000 the state of New York introduced a green building tax credit, the first one of its kind in the United States, that has allowed some developers of environmentally friendly buildings to write off as much as $6 million on their tax bill. The city's Department of Design and Construction developed a set of guidelines in 1999 that encourage environmentally sound building methods for municipal projects. The guidelines had led to approximately $700 million in green city construction projects by the end of 2005.[25] In 2005, New York City mandated that nonresidential public buildings costing $2 million or more be built to standards set by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), which grade buildings in areas like energy and water consumption, indoor-air quality and use of renewable materials. The legislation also applies to private projects that receive $10 million or more in public funds or half of whose budgets come from public money.
