gable vents that let in sun light ? I have a dark attic and i want to bring in light. i thought about taking the vents out and installing windows but i need to vent the attic and i dont really want to bother with a ridge vent. so is there a gable vent that i can put in that i can adjust to let in light ?
Can I use a gable fan in an attic with ridge vents? I have terrible moisture problems in my attic that leads to mold. I just had the roof replaced 1.5 yrs ago along with the sheathing and the mold is back. There are ridge vents and the foam pieces to hold the insulation away from the edge vents but clearly it isn't working. I am trying to decide on just trying to add gable vents or an automatic fan with humidity and temp control. The problem is, wouldn't a fan just draw air through the ridge vent area near the fan and not actually pull air through the whole attic? Should I block off the ridge vent?
Can gable vents be used simultaneously with soffit and ridge vent? I recently had a new roof installed. I also had a ridge and soffit vents installed. The attic has been ventilated with gable vents . I have encountered two theorys about the simultaneous venting with ridge and gable vents. Some roofers claim that they negate the functions of each and insist that I block the gable vents to allow the new ridge vent to work properly. Others say they can work fine together and in fact it is a plus to have both kinds. Shall I block the gable vents? Is there a testing procedure that can be used to check the proper ventilation setup?
i have roof vents on my roof already,i'm going to install an attic fan,do i need gable vents also? i had a roof installed several years ago and had roof vents added .i had gable vents, which i had covered up because of squirrels getting in.no more squirrels but there was an odor in my home which i had checked and was told that i didn't have proper circulation and that i should invest in a attic fan.i never had eave vents on this older home so i'm assuming that the gable vents were there for circulation purposes, but i'm concerned about the squirrels getting back in my attic.thanx
Where Can I Find Unique Gable Vents?? My husband and I are building a cottage style home with four gable vents. I'm a unique character and would like to make a subtle statement to visitors before they even enter the house. I'm looking for unique gable vents - not starburst, octagon, round, oval, etc that I've already seen online. I'd really love to have stars!!! Does anyone know of any reproduction companies that may make star shapes for historic homes, or any other resources for my wacky request?? Thanks tons!
Has anyone installed Gable Vents? I have an old house that has no ventilation. I was told by a contractor the easiest way to add ventilation was to put gable vents on each end of my house. I have no soffits btw, and my attic is a finished room... but there is attic space above and on either side of this room... and I have aluminum siding. Has anyone ever DIY'd this? Soffit vents would be wonderful if I had soffits to put them in. Roof meets exterior wall with no overhang. I need intake and exhaust. I would much rather have ridge vents but then I would still need to create sources for intake. There's really no other option unless it is possible to to bring fresh air in from a lower point on the roof somehow. Otherwise I don't think there is any other choice but to cut out places for the gable vents.
Hot attic. Should I install soffit vents or a gable fan. Atick has ridge and 2 gable vents & good insulation. My 2nd floor is always hot in summer and cold in winter in my 1966 colonial house. My attick is well insulated and has 2 gable vents and a continuous ridge vent. I'm trying to decide on a gable fan or soffit vents. I'm leaning toward the soffit vents but was curious about: 1) Installation of soffit vents. Is this easy? What is the soffit board made of? Is this easy to cut? Is it a one person job? 2) If I install soffit vents, should I close my gable vents, as I think soffit + ridge vent would provide the best low to high ventilation. Many thanks Many thanks for the answers thus far. My insulation in the attick is blown in (between the rafters). I added an additional layer (roll) of attick insulation in the last year. It has helped a lot, but still doesn't solve the problem. I guess I'm confused becauseI've read many articles and they all seem to frown upon attick fans (yet people who have them seem to like them). I kind of agree with the experts because if the problem is in attick ventilation, then that problem should be fixed. An attick fan doesn't fix that problem. It just makes it cooler in the summer. I guess it depends on what you call the problem. I don't have other poor ventilation symptoms (mildew, icicles in winter, attick frost, etc). Anyway, it sounds like the attick fan is eaiser to install and will cool things down. Perhaps I'll focus on that "problem" for now. If it's cold in the winter, perhaps more/better insulation is the answer.
Can I install gable vents over siding? I have T1-11 siding. I had gable vents but we removed the old vents and covered the holes with the new siding. Now, we would like to install new gable vents. I am thinking that I should be able to cut holes in the siding where the old vents used to be and then install new gable vents on top of the siding, as long as they have some sort of nailing flange. Then caulk around the edges and either attach a vent cover?? of add wood trim around the vent. Does this sound like it would work? Does it sound like it would keep water out, etc?
Turtle vents on house with Gable vents? My roof is getting replaced and have been told allot of different things by different contractors, some recommend a ridge vent but I don't have soffit vents so ive heard that's a no no. I cant seem to find any information out about whether its a good idea to use turtle vents on a house with gable vents on both ends though so would love some advice. Currently I have a gable vent at either end and no other venting.
Are gable vents enough intake air for a ridge vent? My turbine fans were replaced with a vented ridge on the new roof, but my house has no eaves for soffit vents. Do the gable vents provide enough air coming into the attic? Will making them bigger help? The only place I could add a soffit vent would be where the roof covers the porch. The estimator recommended replacing them both for cosmetic reasons and because he thought that air was getting in but not getting out having only 2 turbines. It just seems like I have the opposite situation now where air can get out, but not enough fresh air can get in. As simple as adding a soffit vent at the porch will be, what can it hurt? I wouldn't necessarily say that the turbine/gable system was 'working', a lot of my shingle damage was made worse by the fact that my shingles were warped and brittle from being cooked by my hot attic below. As far as cheap, it would have been cheaper to replace 2 turbines than to vent the ridge.
How do you install gable vents on stucco and stone on front of house.? Gable vents are on my house plans, but the stucco and stone are finished on the front of my house. ( I think the builder forgot them).Shouldn't the gable vents be installed prior to the stucco and stone being applied to the house? Builder said the are only for decoration. I thought they helped vent the attic. We do have other ventilation for the house and attic. My builder said the serve no other purpose but decoration....I disagree. I wanted them to help vent the attic in addition to the other ventilation. Wouldnt this also help my electrical bill. I live in Texas where it is hot.
Finishing Cabin Walls - What Do I Do With the Gable Vents? I am going to be insulating the inside of my cabin and putting up t&g to finish off the interior. (It's just been studs and the outside sheathing until now.) Essentially, I want to winterize it. I have louvre vents up near the peak of the roof on each gable end - What should I do with them? Doesn't seem right to winterize a cabin and leave the eave vents open to the outside. Especially considering they're up top and would let heat out. This sort of situation - http://www.lancasterbarns.com/acatalog/cottage-399-3.gif Advice? Thoughts?
Can a bathroom exhaust fan be vented thru attic gable vent? I realize that a gable vent is for air intake. But the fan will not be on much, just during showering. I saw some of the horror pictures of venting them through the soffit. I know this is common procedure and those pics I saw were improper installation. I cant spend the money to vent it through the roof right now.
What exactly is a gable vent fan for? My forced air furnace is in the attic and during the 90+ days of summer it seems that my in-wall A/C has to work much more since the furnace blower seems to kick in and blows hot air out of the vents. The thermostat is set well below the ambient temperature. I am considering having one installed but not really sure if I want it for the correct reason.
How to properly flash octagon gable vent? I dont have any trouble flashing square, rectangle, or triangle windows and vents. When it comes to round and octagon shapes I typically just make it work with lots of caulking. Is there a diagram or manual online somewhere that shows the correct way to flash these odd shapes?
How do you stop cold air from attic vents from allowing cold air into the living area? I have a continious ridge vent, soffit vents, and gable vents in the attic. The thing is with this house, the walls are not insulated. There is also a breathing space that runs from the attic to the basement on all sides. My fear is that cold air can come through the walls or electricial outlets when my natural gas furnace sucks air. I wonder if I could block the breathing space that runs from the attic to the basement in the winter?
Are all houses supposed to have soffit vents for the Attic? My house has a breathing space in between the block wall and the sheet rock. This space runs from the attic to the basement. I put soffit vents for the attic to vent. Before there was none. When my natural gas furnace comes on, I think it may pull cool air into the house through the soffit vents, ridge vents, and gable vents. I was just wondering if with my house design, should I have allowed the soffit to vent?
How many gable attic fans should I install? I have 4 gable vents. Two on the west side in each bedroom and one each on the south and north sides of the house. I also have 4 of the newer rectangle roof vents and soffitt all around the house. The house is 3 years old with thick insulation (can't remember th R value). Should I install fans in all gables? If not where and why? Thanks
Is Removing the peak gable end studs safe? I want to install 2 solar powered gable vents but they both have a stud right in the middle of the existing vent. I am just apprehensive about cutting those studs. I intend on framing out the fan with 2 x 4s and putting that in the area where I cut away the existing stud. I just would like some help on weather that is safe or not. Thanks in advance
How can I bypass a thermostat on a power gable vent? I want to be able to bypass the power vent thermostat so that I can turn the fan on manually during the winter. The thermostat only goes as low as 50 degrees. I need to be able to turn it on to keep the attic below 32 degrees in the winter. I don't want to eliminate the thermostat all together, because it will do its job fine during the hot summer months.
My house has ridge vents and gable vents, but no soffits (no where to put them). Should I leave it like this? I am currently adding insulation in the attic. The problem with this house is that the roof stops flush against the house walls. There is no way (that I know of) to install soffits in this situation. I do not have any problems with mold or ice dams. Should I leave the ventilation alone? Should I jam cellulose into the eaves since I have no soffits? I see some light coming from the eaves but it is a small amount. More details: I have ridge vents at the top straight across from one end of the roof to the other. I also have two gable vents, one on each side. There also appears to be some air coming from behind my gutters at the eaves, where I saw some sunlight coming through. There are no soffit vents, and it is not possible to install soffit vents due to the roof being flush with the walls. All of the insulation is cellulose, and there is about 3"-4.5" worth of cellulose spread out through the attic. There are some large gaps (ie - bath room vent) and tiny gaps (ie - between drywall and light fixtures) that I am working on sealing.
Installing gable power vent question.? When installing 2 gable vents, is it better to have one side draw outside air in and the other side push the inside air out creating a cross flow through the attic, or better just to have both power vents pushing air out?
Is it worth the savings in energy cost to install a gable fan for my attic? I went up there and to install a bath fan and it was ridiculously hot. There are currently grated vents at each end of the attic, and grated vents about every 10-15 feet under the gutters. There is also about 1 ft of blown in insulation. I was thinking of installing a gable fan connected to a thermostat. If I were to do this, at what temperature should I set the thermostat? And should the fan blow air inward or outward? I live in Louisville, KY.
what are some tips for venting a room above a garage? i have a 28 x24 room above garage with 4 foot knee walls on both sides. It's insulated with foam on walls and rafters, the garage ceiling is also insulated but it's very hot in the summer and cold in winter. I installed gable vents in both ends but didn't seem to help. would roof vents help?
Can I vent a bathroom out an attic wall vent? I have a second story bathroom that has moisture problems from showers. I want to install a bathroom vent. I cannot terminate it out the roof because the roof is too high and steep. I cannot use a soffet vent because the roof is too steep to get at it from the attic and the soffit too high to reach from a ladder. I have roof vents and vents on the walls (gable vents?). Can I vent the bathroom out of one of the wall vents in the attic?
How do I achieve the correct attic ventilation? The roof needs replacing. I’ve been told the gable vents (one at each end of the side walls) need to be blocked up. Is this correct? There are ridge vents along the top, soffits under the bottom edge of the roof, and another vent (like a flattened mushroom) extending out of the roof. Also, is there anything else I should watch out for or ask when I talk to the roofers? As you can tell, I don’t know much about this and I don’t want to get scammed. The main part I'm unclear about is if the existing gable vents (one at each end of the side walls) need to be blocked up (as I've been advised), taking into account the other vents that are there. I'd have thought the more vents the better, so would it be better to leave them open?
can I install windows in my attic ? I have large gable vents in my attic. 3 of them. and I would like to take them out and put windows in there to bring in more light but I also want to keep the attic ventalated. how would I do that ? I thought about maybe putting in the windows and above the windows at the ridge putting in a triangle gable vent but of cource it would be smaller than the vents that i have now. Its a walk up attic with buit in stairs and wood plank flooring.
Replaced a gable vent, Will it leak without caulking? Squirrels ate through my wooden gable vent and got into my attic. I replaced it with the same exact gable vent, bought from home depot. Left the flashing at the from the old one. However after It was installed with 16d finish nails i realized i forgot to put caulking around the flange. Is this going to cause a terrible leak? I plan this fix to be semi temporary and want to replace the vent once again within a year or two when I re-side the whole house. Any input would be appreciated. Should I risk ripping it apart to remove it and add caulking or can I just caulk all around the outside edges?
Soffit vents not connected to ridge vents? I have a house with a gable roof where the second floor is a loft. There are triangular crawlspaces to the sides of the loft space and a triangular attic space above the ceiling. There is an access door to the northern crawlspace and no access to the attic space. The crawlspaces to the sides are not connected to the attic, but there are soffit vents and ridge vents. Since the crawlspaces are not connected to the attic there is no airflow from the soffit vents to the ridge vents. The problem is that in the winter I often get strong, cold north winds which send lots of cold air into the crawlspace via the soffit vents, and then directly into the house via the crawlspace access door and most of the electrical outlets on that side of the house. What is the correct way to fix this? Should the crawlspace have gable vents? This would allow air to flow up the soffit vents and then out through the gable vents. I’d still want to seal the leaks into the living spaces, but hopefully the added vents would reduce the air pressure in the crawlspace so less air would be forced into the house.
Replacing a 14"W X24"H Vinyl Gable Vent? A recent windstorm blew away some siding that I plan to replace. I also need to replace a 14"W X24"H Vinyl Gable Vent. Neither HD nor Lowe's carries it. All the Siding and Roofing suppliers I talked to in Detroit area don't carry this size. Any idea where I can buy 2 - 3 pieces? Also what is the difference between a "flush-mount" and a "recessed" Vent? The existing vent sticks out beyond the siding and is nailed down on the surrounding flange that is concealed under the siding.
what type of soffit vents to add? I recently had my roof redone and went with a ridge vent along both my house and detached garage. The problem is I have vented soffit on my house but my garage has nothing. I have one gable vent that i plan on blocking off after I install the soffit vents. Im just wondering what is the most common way to go about putting these vents in without replacing the soffit. I dont want to mess with the existing siding as its pretty new and really nice. Im debating on whether those 2-6" round pvc vents would look better in the soffit or just add the regular rectangle ones. Im thinking the rectangle ones will look tacky just screwed to the exitsting unvented soffit. Im leaning towards just gettting some of the 3" round white ones to match, and putting me a few of those in...opinions? That was the whole point of the question. It has zero vents right now as well as unvented soffit. I dont want to tear it all out as its practically brand new. I want to cut the vents into the existing unvented soffit. That being said I think the PVC round vents would look better, but dont know as Ive never seen them installed. Had the siding not been already installed, it would be a no brainer to use vented soffit.
Would soffit vents cause a house to be more drafty in the living space? I have an older block home with siding. The only insulation in the home is in the attic floor joists. The home has two gable vents. It is also built with that breathing space with firring strips between the block and drywall. This space runs from the attic to basement. I vented the soffits by nothching out the wood and adding vented soffit siding, cause the house had no vent holes in the soffit at all. My concern now is that in an attempt to make the attic cooler, I actually made the house colder and harder to heat in the winter. Any opinions welcome.
alterantives to fascia board? i'm having trouble deciding what to do on our eaves. we like short overhangs, despite the mess rain makes. we live in phoenix, so rain is rarely an issue. we wanted to match our existing crown moulding on our house, but may not be able to install it do to our gable vents being so high. we don't want to do fascia board. my question is, what are our other choices? our house is italian plaster exterior with used red brick accents.
installing a ridge vent ? inmy attic I have gable vents and I want to take them out and put in gable windows. In order to keep the attic ventalated i want to install a ridge vent. I have a chimney going up thru the center of my attic and thru the ridge of my roof. can i still install a ridge vent there ?
